Review status: pending licensed-electrician review. These are original questions written to the PSI content outline and referenced to the 2023 NEC, 2016 PA 407, and the Part 8 rules. Calculations were checked by script against 2023 NEC table values, but no licensed electrician has reviewed them yet, so we don't claim they are expert-reviewed. Spot an error? About the weights: PSI lists the content areas but does not publish how many questions come from each one. The weights above are our own estimate, leaning toward the areas a master is expected to plan and supervise: load calculations, services, feeders, transformers, motors, special occupancies, and emergency and standby systems. They are not official.

Master electrician exam FAQ
How many questions are on the Michigan master electrician exam?
The PSI candidate bulletin lists 76 questions with 180 minutes to finish. You need 75% to pass, which is 57 of 76.
Is the master exam open book?
Yes, with the same rules as the journeyman exam: the NEC with factory markings and tabs only, plus printed copies of 2016 PA 407, 1972 PA 230, and the Part 8 Michigan Electrical Code Rules, each bound separately with three staples and no highlighting, marks, or tabs. The NEC Handbook is not allowed.
What is different about the master exam?
PSI lists the same content areas as the journeyman exam plus the additional knowledge needed to plan and supervise electrical installations. Expect more design-level work: service, feeder, and multifamily or commercial load calculations, transformer and motor protection, special occupancies, and emergency and standby systems.
Who can take the master exam?
PA 407 sec. 713 requires you to be at least 22, to have at least 12,000 hours of experience over at least 6 years under a master electrician, and to have held a journeyman license for at least 2 years. Apply to LARA first; PSI schedules you after approval.
What does it cost, and what if I fail twice?
The exam fee is $100 (PSI bulletin and PA 407 sec. 707). Under PA 407 sec. 713(2), after failing the master exam twice within 2 years you must wait at least 1 year from the second failure, then show a board-approved course before testing again. PSI’s bulletin describes the attempt limit differently, so confirm with LARA.
Are these the real exam questions?
No. MI Trade Prep questions are original practice items written to PSI's published content list and referenced to the 2023 NEC and Michigan law. They are not actual exam questions, and MI Trade Prep is not affiliated with LARA or PSI.
