Michigan law and rules: our journeyman bank has a few Part 8 questions. The Master bank has a full Michigan law topic (PA 407 and Part 8). Those documents are allowed in the exam room, so read them and know where things are. Part 8 rules (PDF) · LARA code books.

Journeyman electrician exam FAQ
How many questions are on the Michigan journeyman electrician exam?
The PSI candidate bulletin lists 80 questions with 150 minutes to finish. You need 75% (60 correct) to pass.
Is the Michigan journeyman electrical exam open book?
Yes. PSI allows the NEC (factory markings and tabs only) plus printed copies of the Skilled Trades Regulation Act (2016 PA 407), the Stille-DeRossett-Hale Single State Construction Code Act (1972 PA 230), and the Part 8 Michigan Electrical Code Rules. Printed documents must be bound separately with three staples on the left edge and have no highlighting, marks, or tabs. The NEC Handbook is not allowed.
Which NEC edition is the exam based on?
The 2023 NEC, as adopted by the Part 8 Michigan Electrical Code Rules (effective March 12, 2024). PSI says other NEC editions may be brought in, but questions are based on the 2023 edition.
Who can take the journeyman exam?
LARA requires you to be at least 20 years old and to have at least 8,000 hours over at least 4 years as an electrical apprentice, supervised by a Michigan-licensed journeyman or master electrician. Some recognized training can count toward the requirement. You apply to LARA first; PSI schedules you after approval.
What does the exam cost, and what if I fail?
PSI lists a $100 exam fee. A failing score report includes a diagnostic of your strengths and weaknesses. Retake limits are described differently by PSI (two attempts within one year) and LARA (two failed attempts within two years, then a one-year wait and an approved course), so confirm with LARA.
Are these the real exam questions?
No. MI Trade Prep questions are original practice items written to PSI's published content list and referenced to the 2023 NEC. They are not actual exam questions, and MI Trade Prep is not affiliated with LARA or PSI.
