Michigan mechanic recertification: tune-up, electrical, and brakes
Most Michigan mechanic categories don’t expire, but three automobile and light truck categories must be recertified every five years.
The schedule
| Category | Most recent | Next years |
|---|---|---|
| Engine Tune-Up/Performance | 2023 | 2028, 2033, 2038 |
| Electrical Systems | 2024 | 2029, 2034, 2039 |
| Brakes and Braking Systems | 2025 | 2030, 2035, 2040 |

Three ways to recertify
- Pass the latest state mechanic certification test ($18 per test).
- Show proof of current and appropriate ASE certification.
- Successfully complete a state-approved training program.
Renewing your certificate
You can renew up to 60 days before expiration, online (fastest) or by mail. Renewing after the expiration date adds a late fee of half the renewal fee.
If you’re retesting, practice with our Engine Tune-Up, Electrical Systems, and Brakes banks. Each has a free 15-question sample.
